The RCA Airnergy is the kind of product you expect to be an elaborate April fool’s joke. The Airnergy is able to convert Wi-Fi signals into DC power sufficient enough to charge most gadgets – at this time using mobile phone batteries and handheld devices as an example.
The company claims that the enclosure above that charges an internal battery will sell for between $39 and $49, and will later release batteries with integrated circuitry meaning that your mobile phone will charge itself whenever it finds itself in a hotspot. The gentleman in the YouTube video below claims that the device was able to charge a Blackberry Bold from 30% capacity to full in about 90 minutes – not bad!
This technology isn’t new, but the ability to use it practically is. It’s unknown to me what the charge rates for different types of wireless networks are, and if numerous networks will minimise charge time. Will the product interfere with wireless signals in any way?
Consider the cost savings and convenience by having the product developed to a point where Wi-Fi in aircraft would negate the need to provide in-flight power outlets and, at the same time, keeping people both connected and charged up. In a more ambitious way, imagine having the technology developed to a point where your electric car would charge itself off a Wi-Fi network every time you parked it in your garage – or even while you’re driving along the street.
It’s worth watching this video if for no other reason than to hear the presenter say “battery”. Also, check out the YouTube video below by an RCA rep in Las Vegas taken last week.
RCA expect to be selling the product in time for the US summer.
