What is Crew Resource Management?

CRM deals with the cognitive and interpersonal skills that are required to manage a flight within an organised and broad aviation system. In this context, cognitive skills are defined as the mental processes used for gaining and maintaining situational awareness, for solving problems and for making decisions. Interpersonal skills are regarded as communications and a range of behavioural activities associated with teamwork.

CRM training for crew has been introduced and developed by aviation organisations including major airlines and military aviation worldwide. CRM training is now a mandated requirement for commercial pilots working under most regulatory bodies worldwide.

What is the objective of CRM?

CRM is used to manage the variables in human design. In any aircraft, the most likely component prone to any kind of failure is the biological entities in the cockpit. CRM manages the way in which humans (and most notably, pilots) interact with each other, air traffic control, engineers, cabin crew, passengers and each other in order to minimise the likelihood of poor decision making that may contribute towards an incident or accident. CRM is very much a collaborative approach to successful completion of any flight.

How did CrewResourceManagent.net evolve?

It was 2006 and a CRM course was required for an aviation organisation I was working with for compliance with a Civil Aviation Safety Authority requirement for CRM training. Although we had mandatory classroom training (that I was heavily involved with), we didn’t have a preparatory resource available to pilots. I convinced company management to use an online system for deploying information, and a variant of the CRM course that now resides at CrewResourceManagement.net was born.

Future of CrewResourceManagement.net

Many of the authors of flight.orga sister site to Internoetics.com – have a history and interest in all matters CRM. For that reason we’ve launched the site and plan to either write a blog at that or integrate the content with flight.org. The quantity and quality of the emails that subscribe to the mailing list really deserve good content.

CrewResourceManagement.net is currently a static website. This will change!

How does CRM relate to general project management?

Even though CRM is used heavily in aviation, it is being progressively embraced by other industries as a means of integrating the overlap between people skills and technical knowledge. Heavy vehicle transport, the medical profession and maritime transport are just a few examples of other professional groups that adopted CRM in one way or another to minimise collateral damage done by the lack of a cohesive communication system.

Web developers can embrace CRM by implementing their own systems of quality assurance in their collaborative approach to time management, task management and communication systems.
